The dawn of the social networking

This is a reply on my own blog to Stephens last post about habbernas,

Their are three main social networks that are dominant in my era. The first being face book. Pros and cons : 1.Easy way to get a hold of someone if you have a good Internet connection or Internet use at all.
2. you don't wanna physically carry on a conversation with someone. (while why are you communicating with them at all. to be nice? social rules society has placed on us?)
3. To have an online personality. this one is huge. Online personalities have opened up doors for the part of society that does not necessarily want to be seen or heard. They feel comfortable with the web forming as a mask for them to explore or exploit themselves. I looked up the definition for online idendentity was as followed :" The creation of online social networks like MySpace and Facebook, allows people to maintain an online identity within a overlapping online and real world context These are often identities created to reflect a specific aspect or best possible version of themselves. Representations include pictures, communications with other 'friends' and membership in-network groups. Privacy controls, especially limited to specific networks on Facebook, are also part of social networking identity."

so to agree with habernas yes online social networking is taking reality out of context.People are literally making up their own personality's or how they wish others to precive them. The thing is this is only for online users. what about every day people that you meet and communicate with. You get a distortion of reality.

however people can now present their own personality generaly without fear of being ridiculed, weather it be sexual orinentaion or traits, looks that they are curious about. the web of social networking allows you to speak to a varity of people about the subject your curious about annonymously. Same rules apply though you have to first shift though the bullshit.

The book "building virtual communities" is about exploring online identity. The authors put presure on the concept of the "mask" that was mentioned abouve. It is said that "They point out that whenever an individual interacts in a social sphere they portray a mask of their identity. This is no different online and in fact becomes even more pronounced due to the decisions an online contributor must make concerning his or her online profile. He or she must answer specific questions about age, gender, address, username and so forth. Furthermore, as a person publishes to the web he or she adds more and more to his or her mask in the style of writing, vocabulary and topics." this leads into what ted was saying about how they get all this information out of you without you even realizing it.

after reciving all the information about you it then opens up doors for consumerisim. YEAH!!!!! thier is now junk text mail. which is junk mail in text message form. I bet Mr. Bell is turning over in his grave.

also frams that play your picture life back to you

One more thing. I was recently in future shop with my friends visiting from London. I came to a complete stop and a look of shock came over my face when I saw a guy trying to get commission on selling the couples on "digital photo-book" wtf? seriously who would buy that. I saw it playing pictures of this couple traveling and sharp images of the husbands chiseled abs with a glass of wine. yada yada yada. I don't understand this concept at all. My friends from London were all two familiar with it. They were not shocked nor questioned anything about this. To me I just don't see a purpose to it at all. Do you turn it on when guests come over to be a "supreme white person" (ref:"stuff white people like) and you then get to talk about all the cool places you traveled to in europe. Does this promote bragging rights? Then you best be switching it off when they leave. do you sit their and watch a slide show of your life to be nostalgic. To regret. to remember good times. I then came home to night and guess what was up on the table ...yeah you bet that picture "life book" seriously way to conserve energy go team go......(I apologize for my pessimistic response to technology) its not my fault, it made me into this monster of technology hate

undicided about face to the book

You tube has been such a big phenomenon in the 20th century crowd. All these online sources started to emerge when young hipsters started looking for an easy way to communicate. I have never been a fan. Others seem to check their "facebook" or email everyday. this mind boggles me. I check my email maybe once a month same with my face book. If shit is important people will take the time to get a hold of you. For example on my wall (which I checked 3 days ago) I had happy birthday wishes
bday was on the 3rd) from 42 people. Do you know how many calls I got? about 15 but they were from the people who matter most to me and me to them. When someone I like is having their birthday I phone sing happy birthday and most of the time make a card. I think I even do that for people I am not even close with to make them feel special. So thanks but no thanks if u wanna wish me a happy bday call me, dont waste space on my facebook wall wishing me the best. that doesn't even count as being thoughtful to me...basically when it comes down to it. that makes letters all that much more meaningful. when someone gives you a letter you know that shizz is serious stuff. oh dam facebook to hell. I hate social networking. So IF YOUR ON FACEBOOK ALL THE TIME. TAKE A DAY OFF BE A HUMAN AND TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS IN REAL LIFE......WHAT A CONCEPT HUH?

ipods particularly intrest me. as well as text messaging. most recently I saw a frame that plays your own picture album....this is very puzzeling to me.

I hate computers and I don't understand their function or the internet...nor do I care too. I am enrolled in comns and art history and an english class. I hope to race off to SFU in jan. this is my third year.
